Overview / Syllabus / Schedule

India,

the one land that all men desire to see,

and having seen once by even a glimpse,

would not give that glimpse for the shows of all the rest of the globe combined. ~Mark Twain

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Aspiring Yogi
Thank you for inquiring into our Vishwa* Yoga Teacher Training program. In the following pages I hope to express our heartfelt sincerity to support you in the noble endeavor of becoming a true Yogacharya (teacher/exemplar of yoga); and explain, with as much brevity as possible, how that support will look and feel and transform.
It is inevitable that these descriptions and explanations will fall short as this program is very extensive—to say the least. Indeed, what you begin here is likely to extend throughout your life, and maybe even the afterlife. Therefore, much of it is beyond words. Nevertheless, please contact me with any questions or concerns you may have that are not covered in the pages ahead.
Our Mission
The Vishwa Yoga training evokes necessary wisdom, in harmony with safe and effective practices, to reach a level of transformation for which each unique aspirant is ready. Though the practice of yoga asana (postures) plays a prominent part in the training, it is not given disproportionate emphasis (as it is with many yoga trainings).
Whether a vigorous or gentle approach, yoga must be accessible for every-body, every-mind, and every-spirit, or it is not a practice that honors the very spirit of the name. Yoga is the process of uniting and harmonizing one and all. Our training meets and challenges each unique trinity of body, mind and spirit at whatever level of development it seeks to advance beyond. No level of fitness, body type, or previous experience is necessary. The only prerequisite is a sincere desire for transformation and to help others. (Notwithstanding, certain mental or physical challenges may be beyond our capacity to accommodate.)
Yoga Teacher Certification (RYT 200 and 500)
Our training also surpasses the requirements for you to register with Yoga Alliance, and thus become internationally recognized as an accomplished RYT 200 or 500 (Registered Yoga Teacher). But let it be clear, our primary goal is to leverage you substantially within the path of self-transformation. Nevertheless, it just so happens that teaching is the absolute best way to continue this lifelong training at a substantial level of depth. Therefore, teaching will be a natural and likely consequence of this training, whether it be casually or professionally. . In this way, our sincere students learn yoga for the right reasons—and become great teachers for the right reasons.
Please Note:
To do the RYT 500 one must have previously completed an RYT 200 Training.
An additional 100 hours of teaching experience, outside of the 500 training, are required before a teacher can enroll in the Yoga Alliance registry.
Readings and Resources
There are many readings and resources to be engaged in throughout the entire training. In the syllabus / schedule (scroll down) you will see readings that apply to the modules. Readings do not have to be completed before a module, and perhaps not in your lifetime. It is preferable to read only a few lines from each book -and really understand and apply them- than to read every book entirely only to result in some vague "comprehension." However, enough will need to be read and digested in order to fulfill homework requirements, such as writing reflection papers. (Details on the readings, including the books themselves, can be found in the syllabus below.)
Homework
It may not be possible to complete all the homework assignments while taking your “contact hours” in Goa. It is perfectly understandable that you may choose to go sight-seeing during our break times rather than do homework. Therefore, if there is any incomplete homework, such as writing a paper(s) or completing a karma yoga project, you will have a month to complete it after the training. AS FOR NOW, it would be a good idea to get the books well before the training and start reading them regularly in whatever order you choose. Make notes as you go along about things you hope to get clarified during the training. We do not believe in an almighty guru, but rather in the power of the sangha (the group collective). And so each evening we will have time for Satsang (truth/group discussion). Sincere students are expected to ask lots of questions and contribute to the collective dialog; while being mindful of allowing others to contribute equally.
Karma Yoga
Many wise yogi's have expressed that, whatever perfections one may attain, without compassion, charity, and service to others it remains of no value. Karma Yoga is selfless service to others. We require it as part of training, as we hope a yogi of value to the world would require it of him/herself. However this is not something we can monitor or grade. (How could mandated service ever be truly selfless?) Therefore, it must be voluntary and on your honor. ~Nevertheless, we have plenty of opportunities to serve within the administration of this training (and even before the training begins), such as helping with organization and clean up. We can also help you to find many other opportunities after training in places of real need! ~As a result of whatever service you may do, we anticipate (not mandate) a reflection paper on the effect of your Seva [another term for selfless service] to be shared with the class.
Pre-Training
In the month(s) prior to training you should be going to yoga classes -or at least practicing on your own- very regularly. It doesn’t matter what style, but try to take classes from RYT’s (Registered Yoga Teachers) if possible.
Pre-Goa Orientation
A booklet is in the making on how to survive India. This is not just about taking care of yourself in the heat and how to eat -outside of the shala- safely, but also on how to be sensible in a land with over a billion people with which most live in moderate to extreme poverty. Yes, Goa is accustomed to foreigners, and perhaps more safe than most places in India. But most foreigners also stand-out like a pot-o-gold in a spotlight. This may often work to the foreigners advantage for accessing assistance; or so it may seem until you realize you have paid 10 times too much for a bottle of water or for the taxi that has taken you to visit all of his merchant friends before taking you to where you asked to go. Furthermore, there are many ethical questions to ask yourself as you encounter opportunities to receive preferential treatment while locals are ignored. Or you may want to give all the money you have to the poor on the first day you arrive. The booklet we are preparing for you is not going to try to answer what you should do, but it will give you food for thought before you interact with the culture. You may be surprised how widely your interactions can affect the balance. Wise interactions will insure the most good is achieved.
Wire Transfers usually cost around $15.
You will need information from us in order to wire the money into our account. We will provide this information once we have received your application.
Passports and Visas and Other Expenses:
Below I have listed a few other thing to consider into your planning in order to help give you the best idea of what the overall cost should be.
Passport: $60 (If you do not already have one and you do not expedite processing)
Visa: $75 (If you do not expedite processing)
To expedite you are looking at double the above prices, but it is usually worth it to get it done quickly and not have to worry about it.
(In the USA I recommend PASSPORTSANDVISAS.COM)
Books: are listed in the syllabus under the various module components. Most of them can be found used (but in good shape) on Amazon.com for less than $65 + shipping. If you get all of the books new it will probably cost around $100, depending on what versions you get. Several can be found for free on the Ocean Research Library program that is a free and safe download at: http://www.bahai-education.org/ocean/
Misc: You will want to have at least $100 for god-knows-what; however another $100 could fill a trunk or two with souvenirs. I usually give away nearly all the things I bring to India and then use the empty space in my suitcase to fill up with items to bring back for friends.
Refunds:
Yes, I put this in smaller print, but not to deceive, but as a way to emphasize that a full refund can greatly set-back the many yoga services CYS tries to reach with its very limited funds.
A large portion of CYS profits go towards running / maintaining a yogic elementary school in Chandigarh, India for about 100 very impoverished children.
Nevertheless, There is a 75% refund of training tuition - and training tuition only- if a student backs out up to 6 weeks before the training begins. 50% refund up to 4 weeks before. No refunds thereafter.
Note: Refunds may take up to 6 months for complete dispersal.
What Now?
Please review the Vishwa Yoga Syllabus / Schedule below and contact CYS As Soon As Possible for more details and / or to get registered.
Some Adamant Advice: Don’t drag your feet! There is lots to prepare for and no time to waste! Reports have said that flights will be expensive this summer, so I suggest buying your flight in the Fall, but don’t wait till December as that is usually the most expensive time to book flights most anywhere. If you need a passport and do not want to pay extra to have one expedited to you, you should know that a passport can take several weeks; furthermore, you need your passport in order to secure your visa, which will take another month. However, most people find it worth the expense to just pay a little extra and have the two done together in less than a month. [If you are in America a good expediting service to use is www.passportsandvisas.com]. You may also want to check with your doctor about vaccinations or Google “passport health” to read up on any possible threats specific to you in relation to India.
I am -literally- thrilled to help you along this once in a lifetime adventure!
Namaste!!!
YTT 500 Advanced Level Students are to be an example to the 200 Level Students. Furthermore, both the Basic and Advanced students are endeavoring to a huge amount of work in a small amount of time. Punctuality is therefore not only proper, virtuous, and polite, but it is also a necessity! This orientation will set us all off on the right foot as well as help us to assist the 200 Level students find their footing more easily when they arrive a week later than you. Yes, you are not just starting a week earlier because the YTT 500 takes longer, but also because you are preparing for the rookies that will be coming. You are to become true Yoga Charya’s: Exemplars of Yoga. It is therefore hoped that our rookies will see clearly that to be a great yogi one must render great service to others.
Module A [ Will ]
Practical Anatomy / Intro to Thai Yoga Massage
Chances are that many of you will have had a long trip and will be in need of a good stretch and a massage. Well, what could be better than starting your training with 3 days of Thai Yoga Massage!
But first we must begin with an Anatomy program created by Paul Grilley so that we can do so safely. Furthermore, this will enable us to give safe and great adjustments in regular yoga classes. Paul also helps you to understand why its good to have no style of teaching set in stone. In the spirit of Vishwa (Universal) Yoga you will come to realize all styles have their advantages, and sometimes their disadvantages. With real live case examples, Paul makes it clear that pressuring students to fit molds or expectations we have learned as "the way we are supposed to do it" is asking for trouble. With Paul we learn to approach each person authentically - as they are - a unique Individual! This is absolutely essential knowledge for conducting a safe practice.
I consider the Thai Yoga Massage (TYM) segment of this module to be like a Hands-On-Anatomy experience. TYM, also called "lazy mans yoga", enables you to take someone thru a full body acupressure massage while giving them a fantastic stretch at the same time. You can use the TYM training as a whole new addition to your yogic work -and thus have extra yogic income - or you may just use it in your regular yoga classes to give your students fantastic yoga adjustments as well as healing and relaxing corpse pose perks!
However the point of this module is not to give you extra tools for use outside of teaching asana yoga classes; rather, these skills will fine tune your abilities to be an extremely discerning, intuitive, sensitized and very well-rounded yoga teacher / healer.
Suggested Reading / Material: There are many books on Thai Yoga Massage to learn new moves and use as a resource. You are free to choose whichever one you like; however you might want to be sure that the book also has a DVD, as so many of them provide.
Module B [ Will ]
The Power of Virtue, Spiritual Companioning: Discovering The Guru Within
This module is perhaps our most profound, healing and transformational. It also sets a great foundation for the entire training. It is the best place to begin because it sets a respectful and remarkably noble tone for how students will interact with one another, and quite possibly everyone else in their life. Some even call it "guru training" because it is that extra special "something" that, not only can make you a great yoga teacher, but perhaps the most helpful friend anyone could ever have when they have a problem; the wise soul and safe haven for the distressed that need a compassionate (calm-passionate) friend often more than a good yoga/asana workout.
So much of this module involves learning how yamas and niyamas (basically the first 2 limbs in Patanajli’s Astanga system) and all virtues get us in connection with the deeper layers within [which is true yoga] while communicating with others. When listening, we learn to do so with our whole being and with no agenda. This may sound simple, but most students are surprised at the challenge it gives them to actually practice doing it. More importantly, it is extremely healing to be heard in such a way. Likewise, learning to speak from your Higher Self -with a language of virtue- to the Higher self in others frees the Higher Self to respond in both the speaker and the listener! To live from this place is the true yogi's sincere aspiration.
Module 2 [ Ramesh, Sonja and Gita]
The Power of Virtue, Spiritual Companioning: Discovering The Guru Within
This module is perhaps our most profound, healing and transformational. It also sets a great foundation for the entire training. It is the best place to begin because it sets a respectful and remarkably noble tone for how students will interact with one another, and quite possibly everyone else in their life. Some even call it "guru training" because it is that extra special "something" that, not only can make you a great yoga teacher, but perhaps the most helpful friend anyone could ever have when they have a problem; the wise soul and safe haven for the distressed that need a compassionate (calm-passionate) friend as much as, and often more than, a good yoga/asana workout.
Required Readings: YTT 200 / Secret of the Yamas - by John McAffee
(This reading can be done before, during, or after the module; but preferably all 3.)
Module D [ Will ]
Spiritual Companioning ~ Applied
Having already taken the Intro to Virtues / Companioning, YTT 500s will teach some of the components of Module 2 to YTT 200s. However, YTT 200s will not go so far as to practice the companioning process. Instead they will be companioned by YTT 500s. Furthermore, 500s will be required to complete the following:
Readings: MK Gandhi: Autobiography; My Experiments With Truth
Dalai Lama: Awakening The Heart
Alan Watts: Psychotherapy East and West
Homework: 3 - 5 page reflection paper on all 3 readings, 1 - 3 page reaction paper regarding film of Carl Rogers
Module 3 / Module E [Joe Williams]
Mystic Anatomy ~ Sacred Geometry
This session is the most difficult to describe. It is a holistic experience that will leave you in awe as you…
Experience the divine artistry webbed into the dynamic harmony of mind, body and spirit.
Evolve to a new level of consciousness by seeing with the eyes of a mystic and moving with the form of an artist.
Engage the nature of true creative flow and open to all the magnificent gifts already residing within you.
This session will be taught by Joe Williams, formerly of the Julliard School of Arts in NYC. As far as we know, Joe is the world’s only reviving master of the Delsarte System of Expression - that at one time influenced a whole era in history— particularly art, drama and dance. However, Joe has remarkably adapted this knowledge to the yogi in a way that will leave you feeling that any sincere yogi of depth will find it as absolutely essential to insightful, graceful, harmonious, inspirational and artful teaching.
Module 4 [ Will ]
Yin Yoga / Vipassana Meditation / Asana Sculpting / The Mahabharata - Intro to the Bhagavad Gita
Yin Yoga
Yin is now appropriately recognized as the other half of an Asana Practice. Vipassana Meditation is the other half of a Yin Practice. Both are becoming the most widely practiced and celebrated forms of therapeutic spiritual growth. Vipassana also enhances one’s ability to get the most out of all other forms of asana and meditation.
Suggested Reading: Bernie Clark: YinSights: A Journey into the Philosophy & Practice of Yin Yoga
Suggested Video: Yin Yoga - by Paul Grilley
Asana Sculpting
There are 7 foundations for adjusting yoga students in postures to keep them and safe and help get the most out of a pose. There is also an art to each technique. After these are learned you will be permitted to practice giving adjustments to others during Mysore practice.
The Mahabharata / Intro to the Bhagavad-Gita
The "Gita" is considered "the Bible of yoga" and "the world's oldest psychology textbook.” This intro will help prepare you for a deeper understanding that comes up in the next module/weekend.
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
Intro to the limbs of Astanga Yoga: Astanga is mainly known as a difficult style of asanas, also known as Power Yoga. However it is more accurate to be understood as 8 different, but organically interconnected, "limbs" of a prescribed way of life.We will explore the interconnection of these 8 limbs: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi
Required Readings:
TKV Desikachar: The Heart of Yoga
Stephen Cope: The Wisdom of Yoga
(These 2 books are not to be read and digested before or after this module, but should be studied in pieces throughout the entire training.)
Required to Review: Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
(Dont expect to understand the Sutras without commentary, just get acquainted. It will make a little more sense later on in light of the other books. The Sutras are also already included in both of the required books mentioned above: Desikachar and Cope)
Module F [ Sonja / Ramesh]
Advanced Posture Sculpting / Sanskrit / Moving & Speaking from Wholeness
This title is pretty much self-explanatory; except for moving and speaking from wholeness; which cannot be described here.
Module 5 [ Will ]
Chakra Anatomy / The Bhagavad-Gita / Pranic Healing / The Seven Valleys / The World's Religions / Cross Referencing for Truth / Way of the Peaceful Warrior
Chakra Anatomy
We will take an in-depth look at the major chakras, how they affect our behavior and health, how to assess whether they are balanced or not, and how to draw energy to them or away (depending on the assessment) with postures, mantras and mudras; and ~most importantly~ with the use of virtues in respect to the specific life challenges that affect each chakra.
Cross Referencing For Truth
Are the world’s religions really at odds??? Or does humanity have an odd tendency to create arbitrary divisions when challenged by the divine wisdom of paradox???
The Seven Valleys
This is a Book that ultimately requires knowledge of the 7 major chakras and providential life experiences to truly understand. However, you can be assured these experiences will come. Written by the prophet, Baha'u'llah, who was unlearned in Sufi mysticism, nevertheless, inspired the learned Sufis of the day to spontaneously refer to him as a Sufi Master. This book is in response to perplexities put forth by an adept Sufi in reference to the deeply esoteric poetry that is strongly webbed into Sufi teachings. Therein, we also find—by cross referencing for truth—that the chakras referred to by the Hindu mystics are simultaneously illuminated in terms of life stages and challenges.
Required Skimming: The Seven Valleys, by Baha'u'llah
(Dont expect to understand this book, just get acquainted with it. It will make more sense later on. It can be found on your Ocean program (which can be downloaded safely and for free in about 10 minutes at: http://www.bahai-education.org/ocean/ or it can be bought at Amazon.)
Pranic Healing (similar to Reiki Training / Attunement)
Reiki Masters will teach the healing method of Reiki in relation to the Indian method of Pranic Healing, including how to apply it to your skills as a Thai Yoga Masseur. After the "attunement" you will be giving a Reiki I certificate.
Suggested Reading: Dr. Eric Pearl. The Reconnection
The Bhagavad Gita
Considered "the Bible of yoga,” and "the world's oldest psychology textbook,” the "Gita" describes a way of life that is the surest path towards the ultimate states of yoga; the same yoga promised at the heart of all world religions.
Peaceful Warrior
This is a great movie that contains the essence of many teachings found in the above readings.
Required Reading: Bhagavad Gita
(Although this holy book can be found on the Ocean program, everyone should have their own "Gita"; but, as i have said about many of the books, don't expect to understand it at all ...early on; it will make more sense in context of the training, the other books, and in the context of living a yogic life.)
Module 6 [ Will ]
Ayurveda / Our Karmic Footprint
Ayurveda / Yogic Lifestyle and Diet
Discover your Dosha (Ayurvedic Constitution) and learn why what’s good for others (in terms of diet, exercise, approach to life, etc.) may not be good or optimal for you—and the reverse.
Required Reading: Ayurveda and the Mind- by David Frawley
Softening Your Karmic Footprint
Perhaps you have heard of your Carbon Footprint and how it affects your Self and the world in ways you may not have been aware of. Similarly, the way in which we lead our lives affects the macrocosm in ways we have not previously imagined. In this segment, we will have a contemplative meditation followed by a discussion that penetrates many veils on the surface of our minds that could be easily brought down, but more often are ignored.
**********
and much more...
We hope all of the above gives you a good taste of the program; there are 4 more RYT 200 modules and 6 more RYT 500 modules not listed.
We will provide you with the remainder of the syllabus once you have subitted your application ~ or upon request.
We do not have enough room on our website to publish the whole syllabus without cutting into a lot of other pertinent information, such as...
What is....
Vishwa Yoga
Vishwa means Universe in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India. However, just as all the languages of the world have a word for the Universe they also have a word for Yoga. In English perhaps the best word we have for yoga is religion. It may sound scandalous but, if you trace the word religion back to its Latin roots, we find: Re - means to bind back, and, Legio - to make whole. What better definition of yoga could there possibly be! ***
In other words, Yoga is not A Religion, Yoga IS Religion. Religion IS Yoga. And if you take it a bit further you find that many people are practicing divisiveness in the name of religion/yoga, even though divisiveness is definitively proven to be anti-religion. However there is much in the world that may or may not have the names of religion tied to them that nevertheless act as a yoke to bring together one and all. In other words, some may find some level of yoga/religion in sculpting, others in gardening or cooking, and others in stretching and meditating. Even the systems in India admit that there are countless forms of Darshan (systems of wholeness) that can be found throughout the world. However, the strongest systems believe in science, as most Indian systems do. For if a system is strong in truth it will survive the rigors of scientific analysis, testing, and cross-referencing with other established truths from wherever they may come. In this way we are able to sift thru the soot of the ages in order to discern the true gold and have certitude in regard to its actual value.
The Vishwa Yoga Teacher Training clearly demonstrates how spiritual wisdom from around the world -not just India- enhances ones universal understanding and experience of Yoga. We are able to do this (even though it is required by Yoga Alliance to keep with the Indian traditions) by strengthening our understanding and experiences of the Indian traditions by cross-referencing them with the wisdoms of other systems. For example, Jewish Mysticism has the Tree of Life, Christianity speaks of The Seven Sacraments, Islam and Baha’i journey The Seven Valleys; all of which are systems that can bring a greater understanding of the Indian yogic teachings about the 7 main Chakras. Therefore, studying in this way can strengthen our own understanding and beliefs as we deepen with the Indian system. Furthermore, in finding correlations that enable the yoga teacher to meet students from many varied backgrounds we build a strong common ground in which to attract and connect (yoke/yoga) with others.
Therefore, it had long been my intention to have this reflected in the name of this training. In fact, i had looked into the name "Universal Yoga" but was unable to apply it as i found that it had already been taken by another yoga school. However, later on, when i discovered that Vishwa was the Sanskrit word for Universe, i was very happy. Why? Because Vishwanath is also the name of my yoga teacher. Therefore the name Vishwa Yoga is able to support my intentions as a teacher of truly Universal Yoga and also honor the name of my own teacher.
"Masterji" Mysore Sivaram Vishwanath.
