Frequently Asked Questions

What is yoga?
Yoga is a profound system of holistic health which originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It was the first put into written form as the Yoga Sutras. The author was Patanjali (pronounced pa-tan-ja-li). Since the original work was in Sanskrit, there are many translations and interpretations. Yoga is defined in the sutras as having eight limbs or branches. It is the third limb "Asana" (pronounced a-san-a), which refers to postures or Yoga poses that most people perceive as Yoga. The study of asana and physical culture is called Hatha Yoga (pronounced Ha-ta with a soft T). There are possibly more people doing hatha Yoga now in the state of California than in the entire country of India.

What do I bring?
If you have any kind of mat, bring it and see how it works. We have rental mats available for $2. We also sell a thick dense yoga/pilates mat for $30. Practice rugs are also available for purchase. If you would like to bring a water bottle, please be sure it has a cap.

What do I wear? Loose comfy clothing you can stretch in, but not too sloppy. Tights and leggings are good too. Wear layers if you chill or get hot easily.

I have never done yoga. Where do I start?
Always try to get into the Basics classes for the first session. There you learn all the breathing techniques and fundamental poses used in the other level classes. Do not be in a rush to "move on". Yoga is about slowing down and feeling. We feel more when we go slow. We also stretch further and get deeper into poses when we relax and go slow. The body/mind opens up when we go slow instead of contracting to protect when we go too far.

When do I start?
We work in 16 week sessions, but you can start any time in the sixteen weeks. All the teachers review every week and ask who is new. We would pro-rate the cost depending on how many classes you want to take. Class packages are good for 16 weeks from registration. You can take any class on any day or time (4-Packs not included), but all classes in your package must be used by your expiration date or they are forfeited (This does not include Walk-ins or Unlimited Packages).

Description of Hatha Yoga Styles

There are many different styles of Hatha Yoga practiced at the Cincinnati Yoga School. you can check the class schedule to see which style each teacher focuses on. The postures in this booklet are basic instructions and will be affected by the different style accordingly. Following is a brief description of each style.

Kripalu Yoga , inspired by Kripalvananda and developed by his disciple Yogi Amrit Desai, is a three stage Yoga tailored for the needs of Western Students. In the first stage, postural alignment and coordination of breath and movement are emphasized, and postures are held for a short duration only. In the second stage, mediation is included into the practice and postures are held for prolonged periods. In the final stage, the practice of postures becomes a spontaneous "meditation in motion".

Atma Yoga is a contemplative, soul centered way of yoga developed by Christopher Ken Baxter and his colleagues in the fields of physical therapy and sports fitness, allopathic and complementary medicine, Buddhist meditation and Hatha Yoga, A subtle and deep practice, Atma Yoga's pace is attuned to your growing ability to focus attention on the core strength and energy of your own body - the foundation of all Atma Yoga practice. Once you have mastered the foundation, the emphasis moves to development of spontaneous inner guidance. That brings on an exciting personal shift from following the program to following your heart as you develop confidence in intuitive ways of knowing. Learn to relax and trust yourself. You may discover that your Hatha Yoga practices become more expressive, stronger, and more creative - and so does the way you live your life. Atma Yoga: the soul centered way.

Anusara Yoga is a new paradigm for hatha Yoga, developed by John Friend. Anusara [a-nu-sar-a] means "to be in the flow", "flowing with Grace", "to go with the flow of Divine Love", "to follow your heart". Anusara Yoga is hear-oriented, spiritually inspiring, and yet grounded in the Universal Principles of Alignment for both the inner and outer body. It is a uniquely integrated style of Hatha Yoga in which the artistic glory of the human heart blends magically with the scientific principles of biomechanics.

Ashtanga Yoga originated with K. Pattabhi Jois, who was born in 1916 but who has a suitably modern outlook to draw eager Western students to his Ashtanga Yoga Institute located in Mysore, India. He was a principal disciple of Sri Krishnamacharya who, apparently, instructed him to teach the sequences known as Ashtanga, or Power Yoga. This is by far the most athletic style of Hatha Yoga. Ashtanga Yoga differs from Pantanjali's eight-fold path, though it is theoretically grounded in it. On a physical level, Ashtanga Yoga connects the flow of postures with breath awareness in a sequence that creates heat and releases stored energy in the body. As a result builds strength, flexibility and endurance.

"Eclectic" Hatha Yoga - some teachers have studied in may different areas such as Integral, Iyengar, Integrative, Phoenix Rising, White Lotus and Tri Yoga. These are represented by master teachers such as Swami Satchidananda, Rodney Yee, Eric Schiffmann, Joseph LaPage, Ganga White and Tracy Rich, Judith Lasiter and Kali Ray (and many more).

TriYoga Flows
is a complete hatha yoga method. The inspiration and guidance for the TriYoga Flows comes from yogini Kali Ray's direct experience of kriyavati (kundalini manifesting on the plane of hatha yoga). In the TriYoga Flows, breath and focus are united with flowing and sustained postures in systematized sequences. Since the method is systematic, students can progress from Basics to Level 1 and then to subsequent levels as they increase their flexibility, strength, endurance and knowledge. Through sustained awareness on all aspects of the practice, the inner flow naturally emerges. This trinity practice is by the nature of its origin, deeply meditative and transformative.

Forrest Yoga, developed by Ana Forrest, celebrates the beauty of life and the power of spirit.  It is a dynamic and mindful yoga workout that builds flexibility, intelligence and strength while helping students deepen the relationship to his or her authentic self.  Forrest Yoga helps individuals heal from physical and emotional injuries and create a more spacious home for their spirit.
